Below is an overview of some of the beliefs that you will hear at Flower Mound United Methodist Church.

Scripture

We believe Scripture is the inspired Word of God, and is studied with its history, tradition, reason and experience applied to find its truths. By reading the Bible in context, we honor the past, while finding meaning for our current times. Therefore, we can believe in evolution while respecting Genesis truths, recognize the complexity of human sexuality while finding relevance in the Old Testament, and honor the ministry of women while experiencing meaning in Paul’s letters. All Bible study opportunities offer openness for a variety of thought, for it is in our diversity that God’s truths are revealed.

God

We believe God has created all things good, and every human is made in the image of God. As such, God trusted us to care for creation, and gave us stewardship over all of the earth. Though our love has failed to steward well, God’s love remained steadfast, and is fully revealed in the person and work of Jesus. One of our FMUMC value statements is that everyone is a beloved child of God.

Jesus

Jesus is the full revelation of God’s love on earth, and through his mission and ministry to feed the hungry, tend to the poor, cure the sick, and include the outcast, we are given a vision for God’s kin-dom on earth. Jesus teachings provide us the wisdom we need to navigate our daily lives. Through Jesus death on the cross and resurrection, we are assured that love never dies, and forgiveness of our sins is provided to all of humanity.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit has been present since creation, yet after Jesus resurrection and ascension, the Spirit continued Jesus’ mission, enlivening believers to become the church. Today, the Holy Spirit empowers and equips Jesus followers to live out God’s love in the world as we share the spiritual gifts we have all been given.

The Church

The church is known as the “body of Christ,” because today, we are the hands and feet of Jesus, offering God’s love and grace through our witness. Whether through word or deed, we are called to share the good news of Jesus love with all. We find our life’s purpose as individually and collectively we love God and love our neighbor as Jesus taught us. These are our blessings, given to share.

Grace

Grace is the undeserved and unmerited love and favor of God. United Methodists’ believe God’s grace is available before we are even aware of it. Known as prevenient grace, this understanding means that all people are beloved to God, even when they do not know or claim God’s presence in their lives. When someone becomes aware of God’s love for them, and decides to accept that love, it is justifying grace. Once someone becomes a follower of Jesus, they strive to live in sanctifying grace, so that their words and deeds might more deeply reflect holiness of heart and life.

Sacraments

We have two sacraments in the United Methodist Church: Holy Communion and Baptism. Holy Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is open to anyone to receive. You do not need to be a member of the church, nor do you have to be baptized to receive. We also offer grape juice, instead of wine, so any age person can participate, nor is it a stumbling block for people struggling with alcohol.

Baptism is offered at any age, whether as babies, youth or adults. Infant baptism is paired with confirmation, so that in 6th grade, the child may decide for themselves to renew their baptism. We also believe that you are baptized by the Holy Spirit, so re-baptism is never necessary nor required.

Mission

Mission at Flower Mound United Methodist Church is focused on how we love God and love our neighbor. We recognize that our world requires transformation through the Holy Spirit, so we strive to not only learn about Jesus, but love like Jesus. We do this by loving God through worship weekly, studying Scripture, living in relationship through small groups. Our outreach to community is focused on two primary areas – eradicating hunger and homelessness. Each week, we offer specific ministries to our community – whether packing boxes of food through Lovepacs, providing beds through Sleep in Heavenly Peace, doing laundry through Laundry Love, providing breakfast at Denton serves, or offering life skills to teens at Kyle’s Place. Our ministry to be in relationship with one another and our community reflects our belief that no one should be hungry or homeless physically or spiritually.

Our Mission

At FMUMC we believe everyone is HOLY loved by God and Called to Love One Another WHOLLY
